The color picker tool

June 4th, 2008

This is a really simple tutorial, but it took me a while to figure out that this tool actually existed.  The tool is the color picker tool.  It looks like a little eye dropper in the toolbox.  Let’s say you have an image and you want to know the hexidecimal value of one of the colors in the image.  This is extremely useful if you are creating a web page.  You may have a photo that intersects with another part of the page and you want them to be the same color.  We use this Gimp tool to find the hexidecimal value of the color in the photo.  We can then use this value on our webpage.

To use the tool, click on it in the toolbar (It is the depressed icon in the toolbar below).  Then click on the color in the image.  Make sure the option for foreground color is selected.  Gimp will place the color that you just clicked and make it the current foreground color.  You can now double click the foreground color and record the hexidecimal code for the color.  This is a really simple Gimp tutorial, but I think it is a very useful one.  You will frequently use this.

Removing tourists from an image

May 5th, 2008

I took the following photo, I want to remove all of the tourists from the photo using Gimp.  Please note that I redeuced the quality of the image for internet purposes.

The Gimp tool that I used to for this task is called the clone tool.  It is in the toolbox and looks like a little joystick.  You could see it in my toolbox below.  It is the button that appears depressed.

For this photo, I want to remove all of the tourists that are standing in front of the arch.  What I did was to hold down the control key on my keyboard.  I then clicked a part of the arch.  This now gave me a paintbrush that is the same color as the arch.  I was able to use this paintbrush to paint over the tourists and make them the same color as the arch.

My next step was to remove the tourist that is sitting down to the left of the American Flag with his bicycle next to him.  I repeated the same steps as above, but instead of grabbing the color of the arch, I grabbed the colors from the clouds.  And that was it.  Very easy and actually it was fun!  Here is my end result.

Welcome to GimpHelp.info (Gimp Tutorials)

Welcome to my blog on Gimp. Gimp is an image manipulation program. Gimp stands for GNU Image manipulation program. There are many different things you could do with this great program. One of the wonderful things about Gimp is the price. It is free! If you do not have Gimp already, you can get it from here. Gimp is just as powerful as some of the more expensive tools. It’s drawback is that it is a little harder to learn. Because of this, I decided to create this blog to educate people about the program.

I am also in the Gimp learning process. My intentions are the following: whenever I learn a new thing to do with the Gimp, I will write about it here. This way you could also learn. I would also appreciate comments if you find some of my posts useful. As I learn more techniques with the Gimp, I will try to post quick gimp tutorials on this blog. I hope all of this helps.
